Allen Hood Frye storyteller, music lover, beloved husband, father, grandfather and a man with an unmatched zest for life and good food, passed away on June 21, 2025, and was welcomed by the Lord with open arms. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, JoAnn Frye; his loving children, Laura Frye (Josh) , Michelle Gallaher (David) , Melanie Gallaher (Mark), and Susie Gallaher; his cherished brothers, Tommy and Robert “Kooch” Frye (Linda); and his beloved grandchildren, Cassandra, Morgan, Frank, Madison, Madeline, Marlana, Billy, Patrick, Alicia, Gabby, and Forrest.
A lifelong lover of music, Allen shared his passion with his children, instilling in them a deep appreciation for the legends—from The Temptation to The Rolling Stones. His love for music was only surpassed by his love for knowledge. A proud graduate of Huntington High School, Allen further honed his intellect at Marshall University and Ole Miss, though his true collegiate love always belonged to Notre Dame. His unwavering faith in the Fighting Irish continued through every season, and in his heart, there will always be hope for “this being their year.”
A patriot, Allen proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, and as a skilled Pipefitter with U.A. Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 521. He dedicated his life to supporting his community, whether through friendly conversation or a ride into town, Allen was there to support anyone who asked. His faith, shaped by his parents, Joseph and Reva Frye, was a cornerstone of his character. A devout Catholic, Allen's life was a testament to the strength and grace that faith brings.
But perhaps Allen’s greatest legacy lies in the way he loved. As a husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he poured his heart into everyone he met. His grandchildren, in particular, were the pride and joy of his life, and his generosity and selflessness knew no bounds. There was no person he wouldn’t help, no animal he didn’t love, and no soul who didn’t feel his generosity.
To try and encapsulate his remarkable life in a short three paragraphs is like attempting to read War and Peace in a day—an impossible feat, but maybe not so impossible to Allen. What is certain, however, is that Allen was loved beyond measure, and in return, he taught us all the true meaning of unconditional love, generosity of spirit, and a lesson in humility. From West Virginia to NYC, to eventually his resting place in the sunshine of Southern Florida, his love and wisdom was felt in every place and town he visited.
If Allen had the chance to pen his own final words, we believe they would be these: “Life itself is a privilege, but to live life to the fullest is…well, a choice.” It is this wisdom he leaves behind—live fully, love deeply, cherish every moment, travel far, and always savor the good food that life offers.
Though his presence is missed beyond what words can hold, his spirit lingers—in laughter shared at parties, in stories he told, his dance moves, songs sent daily and in the quiet strength of his family who carry him in their hearts. His legacy endures, gently woven into their hours, to be carried in their hearts as he told them the day before he passed when asked, “How long should we stay?” and he replied, “Forever and a day”.
