IN MEMORIAM
Georges is the oldest of a family of seven children. He was born in Port-de-Paix, Haiti, on March 3, 1936 from the late Anne-Marie Toussaint and Alfred Daniel. His parents moved to Port-au-Prince soon after his birth and at the age of 5 enrolled him at the Petit Seminaire College St Martial for his primary education. He continued his education at Lycée Petion where he obtained his baccalaureate degree. He studied International Laws then right after he entered a competition that he successfully passed to become air pilot at the Haitian Aviation Corps. He was sent to Texas foe orientation and piloting courses. He returned to Haiti to serve but, unfortunately, had to resign from the Corps after he nearly lost his life, by the grace of the Good Lord, from a closely missed fatal air crash. His career took another turn. He opened a photography studio with a friend. Destiny took him to Nassau, Bahamas and worked on a cruise line as a photographer. He met his future wife, Claudette Mexile, in Miami, Florida. A few years later they moved to New York. Georges entered the real estate business first as an agent then became a broker.
A few years later he returned to Miami with his family. His life took another turn as an influx of Haitian refugees began to debark on the shores of Miami. He joined a group of concerned Haitian residents to denounce the treatment inflicted on them. They protested and rallied the Haitian communities all over the world to raise awareness. They provided the newcomers with lodging, foods and other necessities as required. The group founded HACAD (Haitian American Community Association of Dade County) organization to defend the refugees’ civil rights. The new immigrants settled down in an area in the heart of the City of Miami. The area became known as Little Haiti due to the fact the settlers had brought with them their history, tradition and culture. Author, David Brown, featured Georges in his book, “The Pioneers of Little Haiti”, among those men who had left their mark and legacy to the future generation. Years later the Haitian Refugee Center was founded to continue to aid the new Haitian community. Georges, in the meantime, used his knowledge of International and United States Laws to continue assisting the Haitian community with immigration and other services. Many of those who had benefitted from his assistance have come forward to testify. Georges had continued serving the community until he was no longer able to communicate.
