In Loving Memory of Jorge “Papon” Santos

December 14, 1940 – May 23, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Jorge Santos—affectionately known as Papon. Born in Bahía de Caráquez, Ecuador, Papon built a life full of deep friendships and unforgettable memories. It was there he met the love of his life, Marilu Velasquez. A proud professional player and supporter of Barcelona Sporting Club, his lifelong passion for soccer was unmatched. Papon was peacefully called to heaven on May 23rd, 2025, at the age of 84.

Papon found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether leaning over his balcony to listen to the crashing waves and feel the sun on his skin, or savoring a bowl of ceviche surrounded by loved ones, he had a rare gift for embracing each moment. The sea held a special place in his heart—the rhythm of the tides, the calm they brought, and the thrill of four-wheel adventures in Punta Blanca. The beach was more than a destination; it was his sanctuary, his home.

Known for his radiant smile and hearty appetite, Papon never missed a chance to share a meal or feed the people he loved. From freshly caught fish to backyard barbecues, food was his way of uniting those around him. He believed the best conversations happened at the table, and he made sure everyone left with a full heart and a full belly.

Papon leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the sound of the ocean, our shared family humor, and every delicious bite enjoyed in his honor.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Marilu Velasquez de Santos; his children: Luly and Manolo † Sanchez, Jorge and Sandra Santos, Luis and Claudia Santos, and Paola and William Upegui.

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: Christian Sanchez; Nicole and Tito Lee; Denisse and Mateo Quintero; Natalie and Cameron Brice; Emelie and Sebastian Otero; Nena and Ernesto Fuente; Willy, Mateo, and Tomas Upegui; and Gabriella Santos. His great-grandchildren—Vicky, Naty, Emma and the 2 blessings on the way will grow up hearing stories of his love and laughter. He is also remembered by his siblings: Joselillo †, Enrique, Queta †, Lourdes, Octavio, and Maria Eugenia Santos.

Each of us will carry forward his memory by living with the same joy, generosity, and gratitude that defined his life.

A celebration of Papon’s life will be held on Friday, May 30that Serenity Funeral Home, where we will gather to remember, honor, and share the stories that keep his spirit alive.

Rest peacefully, Papon. May the tides always carry you home.
