Ricardo Garay, 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home from cardiac arrest, after courageously overcoming the ultra-rare disease cardiac amyloidosis. A husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Ricardo was known for his kind spirit, generous heart, and faith in God.
Born in 1943, Ricardo’s journey began in Huanuco, Peru, where he emigrated at the age of 24 to seek new opportunities. He worked tirelessly in various jobs to support his mother and siblings back home, embodying a spirit of sacrifice and dedication. Eventually, he married and built a loving family, retiring after 35 years of dedicated service at the Port Authority in Elizabeth, NJ. His work allowed him to provide generously for his loved ones.
Ricardo found joy in the simple things of life—tending to his garden, caring for animals, and fixing anything that needed mending. His hands were never idle, whether he was planting a tree, repairing something broken, or making someone laugh with one of his witty jokes. Ricardo had a special gift for nurturing life, both in his garden and in the hearts of those around him. He believed in doing good quietly, and his steady presence was a source of strength to all who knew him.
His love for nature was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of his soul. He saw beauty in every blooming flower, found peace in the rustling leaves, and even found humor in the grumbling of storm clouds. His connection to the earth was a testament to his gentle, caring spirit—a reminder to us all to cherish and protect the world around us. And he truly did.
Ricardo’s warmth extended beyond his love for the outdoors. His laughter, his stories, and his unwavering kindness touched everyone he met. He had a way of making you feel seen, valued, and at peace. One of his favorite sayings was, “Trust God—just go to Him with everything.”
He is survived by his wife, Azucena; his children, Jennifer, Marco, and Javier Garay; his cherished grandchildren: Alanis, Lizy, Gaby and Xavi Garay; and his siblings, Andres Garay, Raul Garay, Juan Garay, Carmela Garay, Sofia. His memory lives on in each of them—in their stories, their laughter, and the values he passed on.
His life was a quiet but powerful example of love, simplicity, and kindness.
May we honor his memory by carrying those same values forward in our own lives.
